FDA Approves New HIV/AIDS Prevention Drug

Follow link to see full article

Adults who do not have HIV but are at risk of getting the disease will now be able to take a drug to reduce their chance of getting infected. For the first time, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a drug for this use on Monday.
The drug is Truvada, an antiretroviral medication made by Gilead Sciences, Inc., which was already approved by the FDA in 2004 to help control HIV infection.
Truvada is a combination of two HIV medications - emtricitabine (Emtriva) and tenofovir (Viread) - into one pill that is taken once a day.  As a treatment for HIV, it is always used in combination with other HIV drugs.

Public Health Agency of Canada: HIV/AIDS Among Youth in Canada

Click Here For PDF of HIV/AIDS Among Youth in Canada

In general, youth (defined here as between 15 and 29 years of age) are vulnerable to HIV infection as a result of many factors, including risky sexual behaviour, substance use (including injection drug use) and lack of information or misinformation regarding HIV transmission. To adequately profile HIV and AIDS in the youth population, it is necessary to supplement current Canadian HIV/AIDS surveillance data with other relevant data sources, such as health surveys, incidence/prevalence studies and data on sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This chapter provides an overview of the most recent HIV/AIDS surveillance data (both routine and enhanced) on Canadian youth as well as a summary of recent research on factors associated with HIV risk behaviour and HIV transmission.

Youth Leaders Wanted

Youth Ages 19-29 Wanted for Educational Video

The HIV/AIDS Coalition is recruiting for Youth Leaders to participate in a campaign about HIV/AIDS. As per our various Youth sessions they identified that they would prefer to hear from their peers about HIV/AIDS. Therefore we wanted to get the Youth Leaders to talk about HIV in various forms such as a coffee table book (like Chee Mamuk’s First Nation Leadership Book); a video which we will feature on YouTube and posters.  The material developed will be distributed to all the First Nation communities in the North West, Northern Interior and the North East.
